From the Kardashians and Jenners to Kat Von D, celebrities are becoming beauty moguls and selling hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of makeup yearly. When it comes to these celebrities, who are very fashion forward but know little about makeup, are consumers spending their money on all the wrong products?
There have been hundreds of articles and YouTube videos discussing dupes for high-end makeup products, including the Kylie Jenner Lip Kits. Sometimes, the dupes work better than the products they are being compared to.
With all of these new beauty companies and products, where should you spend your money?
Foundation
As many consumers and beauty enthusiasts are aware, there are small selections of foundation at drugstores. Maybelline and Covergirl offer full coverage foundations in a small variety of shades.
If you are a fan of makeup from Giorgio Armani, a great drugstore brand to check out for dupes is L’Oreal. Giorgio Armani is owned by L’Oreal, which means that L’Oreal may have similar ingredients. In fact, many have compared Giorgio Armani’s Luminious Silk Foundation ($64) to L’Oreal’s True Match Lumi Foundation ($9).
Concealer
Many beauty gurus on YouTube are obsessed with Tarte’s Shape Tape ($27). Thousands of reviews from consumers concur that it works wonders, but can cheaper products provide the same results?
Yes! In fact, a popular dupe for Tarte’s Shape Tape costs only $4. Wet n’ Wild’s Photo Focus Concealer is available at most drug stores and provides a radiant finish. In Alissa Ashley’s YouTube video, “Tarte Shape Tape VS Wet n Wild Photo Focus Concealer,” the Wet n’ Wild concealer provided a brighter finish and lasted the entire day. This dupe saves you $20 and provides you with a quality product.
Eyeshadow
Regardless of the brand, eyeshadow palettes can be a hit or a miss. A really great alternative to higher end palettes, such as Viseart or Anastasia Beverly Hills, is Morphe. Morphe is carried in Ulta stores and sold online. Their products generally carry two or three times the amount of eyeshadow colors the others carry and are offered at less than half of the price.
Eyeliner
Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($22) is definitely a fan favorite. e.l.f.’s Waterproof Eyeliner Pen Midnight is sold for just $2 and it was described by Harper’s Bazaar as an essential for anyone’s makeup kit!
Mascara
There are so many great mascara options at drugstores. Many beauty gurus on YouTube rave about mascaras from Covergirl. James Charles, a beauty guru on YouTube with over 7.5 million subscribers, was the first-ever male to be featured in a Covergirl commercial (with Katy Perry!). Charles and Perry were both featured in Covergirl’s commercial for their So Lashy! BlastPRO Mascara, which has received thousands of positive reviews!
In an interview with Allure, Charles said, “It’s such a huge honor to be working with one of the most iconic beauty brands in history, alongside huge icons such as Katy Perry.”
When discussing So Lashy! BlastPro with Teen Vogue, Charles said, “It’s phenomenal!”
Lips
In 2016, Kylie Jenner revealed her new Lip Kits. Since then, she has sold over $630 million worth of makeup. Jenner’s lipkits, which feature a lipliner and a liquid lipstick, sell for $29 each. Though these lipkits are a fan favorite, many makeup enthusiasts have found awesome dupes from ColourPop. Most of the liquid lipsticks sold by ColourPop are $6. Their formula is amazing, especially for the price! Jenner even posted on her Instagram page about how ColourPop has amazing products that she loves!
It was revealed by YouTuber Stephanie Nicole in her video “Take Two Review | Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kit (Candy K),” that the formula for ColourPop and Kylie Cosmetics is nearly identical!
“The ingredients from this Candy K and the ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick are identical,” said Stephanie. “The ColourPop one does have a few other ingredients in there, which are filler products, but every single thing that’s in these Kylie Jenner lipsticks are in the ColourPop ones.”
Final Thoughts
With the vast array of luxury and celebrity makeup brands in the spotlight, it is easy to assume quality is high and pay top dollar. The most important thing to keep in mind when you are considering purchasing makeup is if based on ingredients, reviews and performance, the product is quality. Never assume that a higher price means higher quality.
