Beauty school isn’t a place you go because you’ve already mastered the beauty industry. It’s where you go to learn. You aren’t expected to walk through the doors knowing how to formulate the perfect hair color, execute a precision haircut, create a professional blowout or understand the science happening inside a strand of hair. Those are skills that can be developed through education, demonstrations, practice, repetition, feedback and hands-on experience.
Your starting point isn’t nearly as important as your willingness to learn.

Maybe you’ve never held professional shears before. That’s okay.
Maybe the closest you’ve come to hair color is helping your friend pick out a box at the store. That’s okay, too.
Being interested in beauty is enough of a reason to start exploring where that interest could take you. Some students may arrive with experience experimenting on themselves, friends or family. Others may be starting completely from scratch.
Beauty education is about taking that curiosity and beginning to build the knowledge and technical skills behind it. Because there’s a big difference between thinking, “That hair color looks amazing,” and understanding why it works.

You’re Not Supposed to Be Perfect on Day One
Think about learning any new skill. Nobody expects someone to sit behind a piano for the first time and immediately play a concert. So why would you expect yourself to pick up shears, a color brush or a round brush for the first time and instantly perform like someone who has spent years behind the chair?
Learning beauty techniques takes practice.
Your first sectioning pattern probably won’t be your best one.
Your first blowout might take forever.
You may need to redo something.
You might watch an instructor demonstrate a technique and think: There is absolutely no way my hands are going to do that.
And then you practice.
And practice again.
Eventually, the things that once felt completely foreign can start becoming familiar.
That’s part of the process.

Behind a beautiful hair transformation are concepts like color theory, formulation, hair structure, sectioning, product knowledge, sanitation, consultation, technique, timing and problem-solving.
You begin learning the why behind the finished result.
Why did that toner neutralize the unwanted warmth?
Why does one haircut behave differently on curly hair than straight hair?
Why might a client’s inspiration photo require multiple appointments?
Why is maintaining the integrity of the hair just as important as achieving the desired color?
Those are the kinds of questions that can turn an interest in beauty into professional knowledge.
You Might Discover a Talent You Didn’t Know You Had
Another reason you don’t need your entire future mapped out before starting beauty school? You may not even know what you’ll love most yet.
Maybe you enroll thinking you want to specialize in blonding and discover that you absolutely love cutting.
